KASBAH OF AIT-BEN HADDOU is probably Morocco’s most famous structure. It is a historic ksar (fortified village) located in Morocco along the former caravan route that connected Marrakesh and the Sahara Desert. In 1987, it was selected to be included on the list of World Heritage Sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The kasbah has been fortified since the Almoravid period in the 11th century. At that time, no other materials than organic and natural ones were utilized in the construction of the “kasr” save clay, which gives the structure its iconic status. The Berber interior decoration is combined with Islamic art styles to create distinctive and highly lovely patterns. Inside the building, we can find a collection of fortified dwellings, miniature sandcastles, a mosque, and stables; the region itself is situated on the edge of the saline valley of Ounila. The stunning sight next to the river appears more like a spectacular dream than a real site. Nonetheless, the monument preserves the traditions of pre-Saharan residential decoration practices.
Thanks to its structure and location, the site was a typical place for desert-dwellers looking for a way out. The merchants and camel caravan owners transporting tons of gold, ivory, and salt, were considering Ait-Ben-Haddou as the most important spot to relax and purchase products due to its abundance of oasis. In addition, the kasbah has become a popular location for film making. Here are the most famous movies filmed on the site: “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Star Wars,” and “Gladiator.”
